Static Pivots
Consistency matters. Imagine you are a master crafstman, building a set of stairs in someone’s home. Each step is consistent, at whatever size interval you choose that is allowable by law.
The IRC stairs code states that, to comply with stairway requirements, the minimum width for residential stairs be no less than 36 inches. The stair riser code is up to 7.75 inches, and can not vary more than 3/8 of an inch.
These are guiding principles in your ladder from one floor to the next.
Dynamic Pivots
If you are an inexperienced and ignorant carpenter, you may choose to build these stairs with a flawed methodology. One step is 7 1/2 inches, another riser is 8 3/16, and another might be 9 5/8. Your body is at risk traversing these stairs, every time you go up or down them. Please apprentice a bit more I would suggest before you build stairs for me.
